Challenges

As Super Awesome’s ad revenue increased, growing from 51% to 85% of total revenue in 2020 alone, they experienced issues related to ad loading.1 Some technical problems were causing ads not to render properly which caused a delay in solving those issues (due to a lack of notifications in their system). The Super Awesome team had to implement a double-tracking solution, which loaded a specific network’s ad and played that ad first in preparation for possible ad loading issues through waterfall mediation. In addition, it was historically difficult and operationally inefficient for Super Awesome to analyze performance as well as create and manage line items.

Super Awesome was convinced that leveraging in-app bidding could help alleviate this challenge as well as generate higher revenue without the need to create and manage multi-line items in their waterfall setup. They began looking for a platform that provides active technical support and supports in-app bidding. After recommendations from other publishers, they started using MoPub.

Solutions

Super Awesome first tested MoPub on Hamster Town, with over 1.5M downloads, on iOS and Android for rewarded video as well as interstitial ad formats. For their test, Super Awesome implemented Advanced Bidding with notable demand sources like Facebook Audience Network, Vungle and the MoPub Marketplace.

Results

Over the course of four weeks, Super Awesome saw a decrease in latency by 13.4% as well as an average revenue per daily active user (ARPDAU) increase of 10.56% on iOS by implementing Advanced Bidding, compared to Super Awesome’s prior platform, without advanced bidding enablement.2 Super Awesome also benefited from a significant reduction in time and operational cost when managing monetization. Driven by revenue and CPM increases for networks like Vungle, all ad formats saw improved ARPDAU, even with some trackable daily active user (DAU) decreases.3
